Surf Rental Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

By | Allgemein | No Comments

Since many years Ventana Azul Hostel is cooperating with the best Quiksilver Surfschool in Las Palmas. There is no other school in Las Palmas with such a high standard equipment!

In order to garantee you a board we would recommend you to book it already online but you can also do it on arrival at our reception (in this case we can´t garantee you that you will get one).

If you are a total beginner we would also recommend you to take at least a few surfing classes (25€. per day) with an instructor before switching to rental and surf on your own. There is many things about currents and other security information about surfing you should learn first.

Beginner Surfboards

This boards are softboards with a lot of volume (long and thick) which will help you to maintain balance on the board and catch as many waves as possible (short boards are for experienced surfers).

Groups about our hostel

"We came here with our Sailing Team to train in the sports harbour of Las Palmas. The house was perfectly located and it was so nice to have it all for us. Its a very big house so if we wanted we could enjoy the social areas of the house together but there is also enough space if you need a break from the group and be on your own and read a book ..."

− Barbara, Netherlands

"We visited Ventana Azul with our hockey team! It was quite close to our training camp & we loved the facilities of the house like barbecue corner & the high speed internet to stay connected with our family at home. Also tried the surfing on our free day which was great!"

− Daniela

"We came here with our University in order to work on an architect proyect for the townhall of Las Palmas. Although we worked a lot it was much nicer to do it in a place like this hostel. We also tried some activities like the free beach volleyball equipment and the Slackline"

− Susanne

Also we can organize many different activities which can be practiced 365 days per year with our perfect climate. The most popular ones are surfing, paragliding & hiking but on this link you can check out many more activities.

Carnival Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 2016

By | Allgemein | No Comments

Our Las Palmas Hostel ist the perfect base to enjoy the Carnival in Las Palmas. Most of the best events take place on Santa Catalina Square which is a 5 minutes walk away from our hostel. But thats not all: the “Carneval del Sol” even passes by just in front of our hostel! So if Ventana Azul doesnt come to Carnival, the Carnival comes to Ventana :-) (see short video at the right hand side).

We would like to present you some of the most recommendable events of one of the biggest and best Carnivals of the world. (see her list of full events)

Noche de Carnaval

The so called “Noche de Carnaval” are big & long party nights with live music that take place the following fridays and saturdays. Often they start after the biggest events. Following nights: 5th & 6th of February, Monday 8th of February, 12th and 13th, 19th and 20th of February.

Dogs Carnival

7th of February

Worth a visit and check this bizzare event of dogs disguised as Carnival Queens. Some animal lovers might hate that event others might find it funny :)

Gala de la Reina

12th of February

One of the main events of the Carnival. The “Carnival Queen” Show. Every commercial centre or other big company of the island has their own Queen and they are fight to be the number 1. The costumes are really breathtaking and its worth watching it.  After the show a big party night with live music starts in Santa Catalina Park!

Carnaval al Sol

13th of February

This is a very big and colourful parade along las Canteras promenade. So this parade passes by righ in front of our hostel! (see the video on the right side).

Gala Drag Queen

19th of February

Maybe the most funny and spectacular event of the Carnival. Man dress up as “Drag Queens” with high heals and often very crazy dresses. They dance to music and the local crow goes crazy.

Gran Cabalgata

20th of February

This is the 2nd big parade that goes through the whole city of Las Palmas. You sholud not miss this explosion of colours and good energy. Maybe the best way to forget about your hangover from yesterday :)

Entierro de la Sardina

21st of February

This is the offical end of the Las Palmas Carnival. A huge “fish-monument” is put on a boat and burned at Las Canteras Beach. After that some more last live music and drum playing goes on!

Barranco de Moya

By | Allgemein | No Comments

One of the  main advantages of Moya Valley is that its only a few minutes car drive away from our hostel. Although its so close to the hostel it still provides you a very authentic and deep nature experience.

Only the sound of the little creek and waterfall plus the sining of the birds will be your company while you climb some beautiful climbing tracks. Right next to the waterfall (at the end of sector 2) you can find some perfect tracks for warming up.

Our favourite tracks in the 2nd sector are the tracks “Uno pa ca uno” (6b) & el “chau chau de la piva” (6b). More info in our Climbing Guide (avaialble at reception, but only in Spanish).

We recommend you to bring a towel and swimming suite because especially in the winter monts there is enough water to have a swim in a natural waterfall. When you come back to the hostel from Moya you will feel like you travelled to another dimension: )

How to get there by car?

You have to take the road from Las Palmas to Gáldar. Drive for like 15 minutes and then turn right towards San Felipe. At the next roundabout take the second exit. After a few minutes you have to stop right under a the huge bridge of the highway. After crossing the small bridge of the road you are driving on you can park to the left under some big tree.

How to continue hiking?

At the beginning you have to stay on the very right side of the valley. After a few minutes you will come to some old “Aqueduct” full of water and a bit dangerous of falling down.. THere is another option to walk around it (just walk a bit up the hill before the water system starts). After a few minutes you will be in the first section with an ruin house.

But you should try also the 2nd sector which is another 10 minutes more walkin. Again on the right side of the valley. First you have to cross some big fallen rocks and stones (see pics). Then you pass “vegetation tunnel” and walk a bit up the hill to the right side. A narrow hiking trail will lead you to the second sector. When you arrived at a little waterfall with swimming basin you will have reached the end.

El Confital

Quality: 10 out of 10 stars

Level: Experienced Surfers

Distance to Hostel: 2km

Crowds: can be crowded when perfect, not crowded with small waves

Wave: Fast take off, short, shallow tubes

Tides: High Tide

Bottom:  ReefBreak

We are talking about one of the best right-handers of Europe. Due to several reasons this breath-taking adrenaline spots is nothing for beginners. First of all because its a very fast wave. If you fall in the wrong moment you can hit the shallow reef or get eaten by some of the next sets.

The reef is a real tube machine! If it get really good we don´t recommend you to go there as the locals won´t let you take any waves, and if you do so, you could get into problems (no violence, “only” shouting).

Thats why we recommend your guests to go there in smaller conditions and early in the morning. Its like a 30 min walk from our hostel, quite far but really worth it.

Apart from the surf the Confital Beach is a real, pristine beauty. If you go there during the week sometimes you will have the whole beach for you. On the weekend locals like to party there and to barbecues. Its a real canarian place with authentic atmosphere.

Bring some food with you & spend half day there after the suring. You will come back to our hostel totally relaxed!

La Barra

Quality: 7 out of 10 stars

Level: Experienced Intermediates

Distance to Hostel: 100 meters

Crowds: not crowded

Wave: Fast take off, short, shallow tubes

Tides: High Tide

Bottom:  ReefBreak

You can watch this wave from the rooftop of our hostel! Actually there is several breaks over the more than 1km long reef. The reef is located like 300 meters from the shore. You can paddle out there right in front of our hostel.

The break just in front hostel is mainly surfed by bodyboarders but there is another break like 500 meters to the left which is also surfed by surfers.

With the low tide you can walk on the reef and check out the bottom. Actually its quite fun to walk there and see the city from a “Boat-perspective”. We would recommend you to explore the reef with one of our snorkeling equipments. The reef is full of colourful fishes :)

Only for very experienced surfers as its very shallow water and fast wave.

El Lloret

By | Allgemein | No Comments

Quality: 9 out of 10 stars

Level: Experienced Intermediates

Distance to Hostel: 900 meters

Crowds: crowded (especially with low tide)

Wave: Fast take off, than easy, long, playful righthander

Tides: Low Tide

Bottom: Pointbreak

One of our favourite waves of the island! Holds up to 4 meters waves. Very long and playful. The waves gives you time for some turns. Even if big, its not a violant wave!

Due to its high quality and can be pretty crowded on very good days. To avoid the masses and sometimes bit radical locals go there at mit-tide. Be careful entering and leaving the water. Can be quite trick and scary when its big. Be careful not to get to far to the right (when leaving) because otherwise you are stuck without possibilty to leave the water.

If its big you will really need a good duck dive to get out of the danger zone fast :)

If you are luck you can get the ride of your life here. Locals are quite protective with this wave so wait your turn and don´t get angry if they drop on your wave :)

La Cicer

By | Allgemein | No Comments

Quality: 7 out of 10 stars

Level: Beginners

Distance to Hostel: 500 meters

Crowds: Very crowded (international people, good vibes)

Wave: Right & Lefthanders, Fast

Tides: Between High & Low Tide

Bottom: Beachbreak

This spot is the centre of Gran Canarias Surf Vibe. Its located at the western end of Las Canteras Beach. You can find several breaks there. Generally its a very fast wave but depending on conditions can also provide long rides.

Our Quiksilver Partner Surfschool is offering classes for beginners at this beach and you can also rent out equipment for experienced surfers with them.

We would recommend you to go there early in the morning to avoid crowds! After the surfing enjoy the good vibes in surfer bars like “Cafe Central”, “Mumbai” or the new “Lennys Bar”.

For us La Cicer is one of the most consistant spots we have even seen with waves nearly 365 days per year. Its perfekt to train in the whitewater and do your first steps as a surfer!
