Climbing on Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is the secret Climbing Paradise of Europe! Due to its nearly 2.000 meters high mountains and countless, narrow valleys Gran Canaria offers a big variety of different rocks and Climbing Spots. Ventana Azul Hostel is offering weekly Climbing trips to the most beautiful and interesting climbing spots of Gran Canaria.

You can also buy the official Gran Canaria Climbing Guide for 20,00 € in our hostel but as its written only in Spanish we thought it might be a good idea to sum up here some of the best & most recommendable spots of Gran Canaria.

We will offer you info about how to get there, rate the beauty of landscape and the quality of climbing tracks – also you will find the info of distance to our hostel.

We hope with this info we can help experienced climbers to make the most of their stay on Gran Canaria or even motivate some new people who never climbed before to this fascinating sport. Its a perfect combination for other sports like surfing or Yoga, which you can also practice on Gran Canaria & in our hostel.

Sorrueda

Quality climbing tracks: 9 out of 10 points

Landscape beauty: 10 of 10 points

Number of tracks: 86

Difficulties: IV to 7c

Distance to hostel: 80 minutes

This climbing paradise is located in a beautiful oasis in the middle of the stone-desert of the south of Gran Canaria. With running water the whole year through, goats and total silence this spot provideds a nature experience that will touch your soul. To feel the calm but still powerful  energy of the island is an experience you won´t forget.

Fataga

Quality climbing tracks: 9 out of 10 points

Landscape beauty: 7 of 10 points

Number of tracks: 92

Difficulties: IV to 8b+

Distance to hostel: 70 minutes

Very good quality rock with tracks also for very experienced and good climbers. The rock is located right next to a big reservoir very close to the mountain village Fataga (really worth a visit). The valley is not in its natural state anymore so the nature experience is lower than in other places. In the afternoon you will climb in the shadow, could be good as the south is very hot!

Ayagaures

Quality climbing tracks: 7 out of 10 points

Landscape beauty: 10 of 10 points

Number of tracks: 40

Difficulties: V+ to 8a

Distance to hostel: 90 minutes

Together with Tamadaba the remotest and beauftiful climbing areas of the island. Once you arrive at Ayagaures reservoir you have to pass it at its left and keep on walking through the wild valley for another 20 minutes at least. For us this place provices a deep nature experience. You can find some very demanding tracks here.

Roque Nublo

Quality climbing tracks: 7 out of 10 points

Landscape beauty: 10 of 10 points

Number of tracks: 28

Difficulties: IV – 7b+

Distance to hostel: 70 minutes

The Roque Nublo is something like the symbol of Gran Canaria. Its located 1813 meters above the sea level and the views from the climbing spots are just awesome. From the top of the rock you can see a big part of the island. You will have to use the rope 2-3 times to get on top so you should know how to do that. The landscape beauty of this place is beyond compare.

Tamadaba

Quality climbing tracks: 10 out of 10 points

Landscape beauty: 10 of 10 points

Number of tracks: 378 (!!!)

Difficulties: IV -8b

Distance to hostel: 80 minutes

This is the real Climbing Mekka on Gran Canaria. Located 1.200 meters above sea level this is a real natural paradise. While you climb the countless spots in the pine wood forest you can enjoy the views to the sea and the neighbour island Tenerife. There is also a camping ground up there but be careful it can get chilly in the morning! The area is so big and some sectors are quite difficult to find so in this case we would strongly recommend a climbing guide (bookable on our reception)
